A variation of the Snakehead Fighting Fish is one with an exaggerated curve of the mouth sometimes called the Spoonhead Betta. These bettas are strong and fast and are known for having very calculated aim. They may also exhibit longer anal and ventral (pelvic) fins, which can be a drawback when fighting.

So I bought a crowntail a little more than a year ago, and he had a pretty bad spoonhead. But now, it looks like his form has improved and the spoonhead went away! Has anyone experienced this before? These are before photos, I'm going to have to find an after photo. All his spoonhead looks like.

Someone who is selecting color over body form, causing bent spines, missing fins and spoonheads. I don't know if breeding spoonheads will increase these issues, but it can certainly be associated with it. Long fins and bright flashy colors are not found in nature.

sorry if i came across a certain way. ive never heard of a spoonhead before and the gill flaring does sound like a logical option. i have no experince breeding betta, have no such interest in it nor offer any such advice regarding it. its still a very nice looking betta. i hope you have sucess in your betta breeding projects.
